Network Simulation Software for Cyber Exercises

Project Summary: The Cyber Security Exercise and Development Center has been cooperating with the network simulation research performed at University of Illinois under the direction of Prof. David Nicol.  ISTS has conducted an evaluation and assessment of the real-time simulation component of RINSE, formerly known as iSSF.  This proposed application is called netSimNG and is the follow-on to the netSim.  We evaluated the RINSE software to determine its suitability to the task of migrating over from a “ballistic” simulation to a “flight simulator” style which is much more real-time.  We have determined that that can be done, and it is a more robust platform with a unique approach that uses a SQL database for the middleware instead of loading down the simulation by using sockets for interprocess communication.
