Law Enforcement Tools and Technologies for Investigating Cyber Attacks: Gap Analysis Report

Project Summary

The ISTS NNA provides a comprehensive look at the problems and technological impediments facing federal, state, and local law enforcement when investigating and responding to cyber attacks. The next step in creating a national research and development agenda for cyber attack investigative tools and technologies is to identify available solutions that address the requirements revealed in the NNA. These solutions will be categorized and a GA report produced demonstrating critical areas, or gaps, where scientific research may be initiated. The results of this study will be made nationally available, with dissemination focusing on Research & Development (R&D) and law enforcement organizations. The GA report will provide a matrix illustrating the available cyber attack investigative tools matched against law enforcement specific needs. This document will include a snapshot description of the tool based upon the feature that addresses a need identified in the ISTS NNA, and provide the foundation for Task 1.2: a national research and development agenda. Printed and disseminated in February 2004.
