Melissa Muth
Senior Information Security Analyst
University of Pennsylvania

Melissa Muth has been a Senior Information Security Analyst with Information Systems & Computing at the University of Pennsylvania for the past 7 years. She has over 15 years of experience as an application developer, database administrator, UNIX systems administrator, and IT director responsible for email, authentication, network infrastructure services, and VoIP. In 2010, Melissa developed a popular and successful pilot DNS sinkhole service (SafeDNS) which went into production in 2015 and has 35,000 clients. Currently Melissa manages information security projects, and loves automating incident response wherever possible. Right now, she is developing network analytics capabilities to detect compromised hosts and accounts using Bro and intelligence feeds. Her dream is to discern malicious activity using machine learning techniques. Melissa has given numerous talks about topics including VoIP security, web application security, two-factor authentication, and DNS sinkholing at ACUTA, EDUCAUSE-MARC, and EDUCAUSE-SPC. She was an invited speaker at the 2013 Cyber Security Conference for Maryland Higher Education and State Agencies. Melissa obtained a GIAC GPEN certification in 2011 and a Project Management Professional certification in 2008. She has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
