Digitally Connected Yet Worlds Apart: Cyber-Disciplinarity - May Conference

Abstract

Eszter HargittaiCyber-Disciplinarity. Sponsored in part by ISTS, Dartmouth College's Humanities Institute held a two-month program investigating the critical issues attendant to the rise of cyber-culture, in particular, the effects of cyber-culture on discipline, in terms of both specific disciplines of knowledge and broader modes of social surveillance. This program and the public seminars afforded ISTS an opportunity to foster public dialogue on security. Topics and speakers included Joe Trippi speaking on representation and politics in the digital age; Jeffrey Rosen of George Washington University Law School speaking on "The Silver Bullet: Protecting Privacy and Security through Law & Technology"; David Phillips, Department of Radio-Television-Film, University of Texas presenting "From Freedom to the Management of Personally Identified Information: Toward a Political Economy of Privacy and Identity" and Ursula Frohne, History and Theory of Art and Literature, University of Bremen, Germany speaking on "Controlled Observation: Digital Technology and Visual Warfare." An edited conference volume will be published along with a list of speakers, complete with links.
