“Cognitive Engineering: Design for Cognitive Performance”

Abstract: Cognitive Engineering (CE) is concerned with understanding and enhancing human performance in complex, high-consequence work domains such as health care, aviation, nuclear power, and emergency management. Much of the work people do in such domains is cognitive in nature, involving tasks such as planning, monitoring, problem detection, diagnosis, and response selection. CE is a relatively new discipline concerned with how to design effective support for these processes in the context of dynamic, technology-intensive environments. This lecture will provide an overview of the field of CE, discussing it's background, concepts and methods.

Bio: Klaus Christoffersen is a cognitive engineer and principal consultant of Cognizant Systems Design in Hamilton, Canada. He has conducted research and consulted for clients in a variety of domains including health care, transportation, NASA space operations, and industrial process control. His primary interests are in advanced visual displays for monitoring and problem solving in real-time applications.
