Law Enforcement Tools and Technologies for Investigating Cyber Attacks: Gap Analysis Report

This study addresses the following question:

What gaps exist, if any, between the needs discovered in the National Needs Assessment and tools and technologies generally available to law enforcement?

Moving toward the creation of a national research and development agenda for cyber attack investigative technologies, ISTS researchers began a project to identify the available solutions that may address the requirements revealed in the National Needs Assessment. The results of this study begin to demonstrate the critical areas, or gaps, where scientific research may be initiated to address law enforcement's critical technological impediments. The Gap Analysis Report also provides a matrix of the available cyber attack investigative tools vs. law enforcement specific needs.

The Research and Development Agenda, to be published in 2004, presents these critical needs, with background information, analysis and recommendations for further research and development.
